Do I really need that expensive Serum?

By Filomena Murray, Owner\Aesthetician Meraki Beauty Inc.

Face serums are lightweight products that contain a high concentration of active ingredients that treat and work fast. It isn't necessary to have a serum in your routine but there are some compelling reasons to have one.

Every skin routine should have at least three steps: cleanse, exfoliate, and moisturize. However, most clients have at least one skin concern they would like to fix fast, such as acne, redness, or hyperpigmentation. To rewind time and fix the damage, you must add a treatment step to your routine.

When it comes to treating skin conditions, serums are the best bang for your buck! (Even the more expensive ones). They are concentrated and made up of smaller molecules to go into the deeper layers of skin where real changes are made. Serums will always be the highest price point in any skincare line because active ingredients are more expensive than thicker carrier ingredients found in moisturizers and cleansers.

Expect to use a smaller amount of serum than you would your other skincare products, either on the whole face or on the spot(s) to be treated. Serums are applied before your moisturizer because the moisturizer is a heavier consistency that sits above the skin as a barrier while hydrating the skin and preventing moisture loss.

It's never too soon to start being physically active or eating healthy, and it's never too soon to start using serums. Using serums loaded with skin-nourishing ingredients before you start seeing signs of ageing and environmental damage means you will be on track for getting and KEEPING your most beautiful skin.

One final thought to consider before purchasing a serum - are you in the habit of wearing an SPF daily? If not, then you need to start! SPF is important for protecting your skin from UV damage and blue light emitted by your devices. Before adding a serum to your routine, be prepared to protect your investment!
